As Muslims today celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr, marking the completion of the holy month of Ramadan, the Government of Guyana congratulates Muslims on their sacrifice, fortitude, resilience, devotion and spiritual renewal during the month of Ramadan.

In its message to mark the occasion, it noted that “Eid-ul-Fitr is in essence and practice a day of celebration, reflection, graduation and spiritual elevation. After an entire month of abstinence and sacrifice, Muslims rejoice in the month past, engendering the deepening of brotherhood among all mankind and in the elevation of the spirit and soul and the strengthening of faith.”

The government called on Guyanese to practice and embrace the lessons of Ramadan all year “as we rally together and strive as a nation to elevate the condition of all.”

The opposition, People’s Progressive Party (PPP) extending greetings to the Muslim society, noted that the significance of Eid-ul-Fitr is relevant to all of the humanity since it exemplifies the virtues of discipline and sharing especially to those in need.

The party said in a world characterized by so much poverty and inequity, the message of giving and sharing can no longer be ignored, adding that the PPP has always embraced the call for a more humane society consistent with the teachings of Islam in which there is love, brotherhood, and compassion especially for the less fortunate.

On this day, Muslims not only celebrate but engage in selfless acts of charity.
