Following public statements from the Regional Vice Chairman of Region 6, Dennis Deroop, assuming that Regional Executive Officer (REO) Dr. Veerasammy Ramayya has abandoned his post, the Ministry of Communities disclosed that approval was granted for REO to proceed on 14 days of vacation leave.

The Ministry said a formal letter of approval was issued by the ministry and a copy was dispatched to Regional Chairman of Region 6, David Armogan, however during a Press Conference on Monday, the Regional Vice Chairman said Dr. Ramayya has apparently “walked off his job”.

Deroop said no correspondence was received from Dr. Ramayya or the Minister of Communities.

He also stated that there were no formal handing over of duties which left several matters incomplete.

He underscored that there are also issues with salary payments for cleaners and nurses whose contracts were not signed on-time by the REO. Deroop said these persons are still to be paid for the month of June.

In a statement on Tuesday afternoon, the Ministry said Dr. Ramayya’s leave became effective on Monday, July 18, 2016, and will run through to July 30, 2016, and as such, he is scheduled to return to work and resume duties on August 2, 2016.

“With reference to reports in several sections of the media, the ministry would like to state that Dr. Ramayya did not, in any way, abandon his post or walk off the job. He proceeded on leave having applied for and received the requisite approval” the letter affirmed.
