Over the years the Rotaract Club of Georgetown Central has placed a lot of emphasis on literacy and this year, continuing on this trajectory , it will be launching the READ project; Read Every Day and Discover.

Rotaractor, Julene Barrett said the project targets children ages four through sixteen in what could be described as underprivileged communities, namely Charlestown and Albouystown.

Barrett said the Rotaract wants to show children that reading can be fun, “we have an exciting line-up for the children, we have some radio personalities…you may be familiar with Ron Robinson ad Mr Malcolm Ferreira, we have a reading champion, Keon Heywood, we also tried to get some famous cultural icons, so we have Miss Niketa Barker, would be there reading to the children also and we recently got a contestant from Miss Universe Guyana, Miss Ashley John.”

The club is hopeful that the project could be sustained through a youth group belonging to constituency 10, Albouystown/Charlestown.

Barrett was accompanied by another Rotaractor, Nandanie Deokaran who also expressed gratitude to the sponsors, which include Scotia Bank, Nigel’s Supermarket, the National Library and the Guyana Book Foundation, among others.

The event will be held on September 3 at the Carmel Secondary School.
