A 49-year-old East Bank Berbice man was today (Thursday, October 6, 2016) remanded to prison for raping an 8-year-old girl.
The suspect of East Bank Berbice appeared before Magistrate, Alex Moore at the New Amsterdam Magistrates Court where he was not required to plea to the charge when it was read to him.
According to the facts of the case, the incident took place on Friday, September 30, 2016, but the matter was only reported to the police on October 03, 2016.
News Room previously reported that at about 12:00 hours on the day in question, the suspect invited the little girl along with her brother to his home as they were on their way home from school. This was not abnormal as the 8-year-old told police that on several occasions she along with her brother would visit the suspect’s home and he would give them food and sometimes money.
However, on September 30, 2016, News Room was informed that the suspect invited the 8-year-old into his home, while her brother waited on the outside. It was noted that after some time, the brother decided to go check on his sister when he discovered the man lying on top of her.
The boy raised an alarm and ran home where he informed his mother of what transpired after which the little girl was taken to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital where she was examined by a doctor who provided the police with a medical certificate confirming that the 8-year-old was raped.
The susupect is expected to make another court appearance on November 03, 2016.
