Suriname ‘maul’ Guyana 11 – 1 in IGG Futsal
By Rawle Toney
Futsal made an inaugural appearance at the Inter Guiana Games and it will be one that Guyana would not want to remember.
Suriname, in embarrassing fashion, hammered Guyana 11 – 1 when the two countries met in the first of three games today (October 22) at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Behind their vociferous supporters, Suriname came from being one goal down after Douquan Wilson had given Guyana the lead just seven minutes into the game; the goal was the closest Guyana came to scoring in the one-sided contest.
It was obvious from the style of play by the visitors, that they better understand the game of Futsal than their English speaking counterparts.
While Guyana was able to find some amount of success in the early stages of the game, Suriname dominated the rest of the contest.
Terence Aroguan equalised for the Surinamese in the 17th minute, and less than a minute later, he made it 2 – 0. Stefano MacDonald scored seconds after Aroguan to made it 3 – 0 while Gillaurie Strooker strike made it 4 – 0. Nazario Deoburg scored his first of four goals just before the end of the first half to give Suriname a 5 – 0 cushion.
In the second half, the Surinamese once again looked the superior side. Deoburge completed his helmet-trick (four goals) in the second stanza – leading the onslaught by the Dutch-speaking nation who scored six second half goals.
The score-line could’ve been worse if it wasn’t for the excellent gloves-work by the Guyanese custodian.
The two teams will meet twice tomorrow (October 23), first from 09:00 hours and then at 13:00 hours.
