DMW event to close off cycling season Sunday

The 2016 cycling season will draw to a close this Sunday when national cycling coach Hassan Mohamed stages the 17th annual Diamond Mineral Water 50-mile road race, along the East Coast Demerara corridor.

In years gone by, the Demerara Distillers Limited (DDL) sponsored race was on the West Demerara roadways from Wales to Parika, but that will change this year due to ongoing road works along that stretch.

The 50-mile event will start in front of the Ocean View International Hotel at Liliendaal at 07:30h, proceed to Halfway Tree, Mahaicony, and return to the start point for the finish.

The veteran, mountain bike and female riders will turn at Mahaica Police Station on the upward journey and return to the point of origin for the finish.

The first six finishers in the Open category will be rewarded, as well as the first three in the junior, veteran and mountain bike categories.

Last year’s winner Orville Hinds of Team Evolution clocked one hour, 59 minutes, 24 seconds, but it is unclear whether he will defend that title since most riders have already called time on the season.

Christopher Griffith of Team Alanis won the junior division last year, while Talim Shaw was the veteran winner and Sherwin Forde took top honours in the mountain bikes.

DDL’s Marketing Representative Larry Wills will be on hand to distribute the prizes at the conclusion.
