Restaurateur granted $75,000 bail for beating teen unconscious

A Berbice restaurateur was granted $75,000 bail when he appeared in the New Amsterdam Magistrates Court for beating an 18-year-old dog food vendor unconscious outside of his place of business on November 29, 2016.

33-year-old restauranteur, Kam Singh of Chapel Street, New Amsterdam, Berbice pleaded not guilty to the charge when it was read to him by Magistrate, Alex Moore on Monday, December 5, 2016.

The court was told that on the day of the incident, the restaurant owner allegedly beat 18-year-old Osarin Stuart of Fort Ordinance Housing Scheme, East Canje, Berbice with a piece of 2×4 wood rendering him unconscious and had to be admitted a patient at the Georgetown Public Hospital.

According to police investigations, the victim  Stuart and the suspect had an altercation over the victim selling dog food in front of the suspect’s Chinese Restaurant. As a result, the Stuart armed himself with a piece of wood but subsequently dropped it and was in the process of walking away, when Singh allegedly picked up the said wood and dealt the victim several lashes to his head and left leg.

The court heard that the victim was taken to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital where he was treated and later transferred to the GPHC.

After hearing the case, the magistrate granted the accused bail and he is expected to return to court on December 13, 2016.
