East Canje man found dead in canal

The Police in ‘B’ Division are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of an East Canje, Berbice, resident whose lifeless body was fished out of a canal several villages away from his home.

Dead is 40-year-old Isbarran Bhognarine who left his home to go fishing at about 8:30 hours on Monday, December 19, 2016, but never returned. His body was found at 16:00 hours on Monday.

The deceased’s mother, Meenawattie Persaud told police that she last saw her son alive on the morning when he left home to go Cumberland Backland to do fishing.

News Room was told that at about 16:00 hours, a first form student from the Canje Secondary School spotted the body floating in the canal and after recognising the man as her uncle, she rushed home where she informed her grandmother who visited the location and identified the body.

The police were called in and they visited the scene to make observation after which the body was taken to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital where Bhognarine was pronounced dead.

The body is presently at the Arokium Funeral Home awaiting a post mortem examination.

Investigations are ongoing.
