Minister of Communities Ronald Bulkan today (Friday January 13, 2017) told members of the media that the Leader of Opposition is yet to clarify if the names of the three persons submitted by him to sit on the Local Government Commission were selected in accordance with the legislative requirements.

The Minister informed that clarification was sought, in writing, from the Opposition Chief Whip, who is yet to respond. He said this is one of the contributory factors that has stalled the establishment of the Local Government Commission.

However, he has assured the administration’s commitment to the constituting and operationalization of the Commission.

With regards to the names submitted by Government to sit on the Commission, Minister Bulkan said it would be premature to reveal those.

Minister Bulkan noted further that the Government will be proceeding on the basis of empowering Local Government organs to exercise authority and autonomy given to them through the Local Government legislation.

Even though the Local Government Commission is yet to be constituted, the Minister said “I think it is the desire and objectives that were outlined by the Administration which is for the reform and respect for Local Government that even in the absence of the non-operationalization of the Local Government Commission that that agenda has not suffered.”
