New Amsterdam man remanded for raping daughters

A New Amsterdam man who is accused of having sexual intercourse with his 12-year- old and 13 -year -old daughters was remanded to prison when he appeared in the Reliance Magistrates’ Court East Canje, Berbice on Thursday, January 19, 2017.

The 41 –year- old suspect was arrested and taken into custody after allegations of raped were leveled against him by two of his daughters just after midday on Monday, January 16, 2017.

During his court appearance, the accused was not required to plea to the charge when it was read to him by magistrate Merissa Mittleholzer.

News Room understands that the young girls were first sexually molested by their father in November 2015 and he continued to do so until the latter part of December 2016. However, after the situation became unbearable for the two girls; they broke the news to their mother Thursday afternoon.

According to information received, the mother of the girls and the suspect separated some eleven years ago and about fours year ago she started allowing the two girls to visit and spend time with their father.

The News Room was told that on December 14, 2016 the two girls visited their father who lives alone in a one bedroom house, where the suspect would usually share the same bed with his daughters.

Following an interview with investigators, the 13-year-old revealed that between November 2015 and December 2016 at their father’s home, he sexually assaulted them on several occasions.

News Room was informed that both girls were taken to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital where they were examined by a doctor who found that the hymens of both girls were not intact.

After hearing the case, the magistrate refused bail and the accused is expected to make his next court appearance on January 23, 2017 at the New Amsterdam Magistrates’ court.
