History was created on Monday when one of the local utility companies signed a significant sponsorship deal for the staging of an Under-17 cricket competition, which will be organised by the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club (RHTY&SC).

At a simple function at the Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) Head Office on Vlissengen Road, the company’s Director of Human Resources, Management and Development, Gale Doris, presented the sponsorship cheque to Chief Executive Officer/Secretary of the Rose Hall Town Youth and Sports Club, Hilbert Foster.

The partnership between the two entities will see the realisation of a competition for 16 teams in Berbice. It will be branded GWI ‘Water is Life.’ According to information received, it is the first major cricket competition that the company has sponsored.

Foster stated that the GWI sponsored tournament is one of at least 20 competitions the RHTY&SC has planned for 2017, including Under-13, Under-15, Under-19, Female, Second Division and First Division levels.

Doris, in brief remarks, said she is very enthused by the fact that the RHTY&SC will be allowing the participation of a female team in the competition. She also had a salient piece of advice for Foster and the club, stating that there must a pathway for club members to balance their academics with sport.

Foster responded by stating that such a scenario does exist at the club, as members are encouraged to pursue a sound education, even as they seek sporting excellence.

Among the teams set to compete in the tournament are Bush Lot United, Young Achievers, Blairmont, Young Warriors, Rose Hall Town Pepsi A and B, Number 73, Skeldon, Tucber Park and Metro Females.
