Scrap Metal Exporters given go-ahead for “limited restart” of the trade

Government today announced a limited restart of the export of scrap metal for a period of three months.

This announcement will allow exporters to send off current stock they would have acquired during the 19 month closure of the trade.

Minister of State, Joseph Harmon, who reported to the media on the decision, recalled the proposal Minister of Business Dominic Gaskin made to Cabinet September last year to restart the scrap metal trade on the basis of a new menu of measures being implemented.

He says “the process of putting together new guidelines and regulations by the Ministry has been ongoing and the Ministry now feels that is in a position to authorize a limited restart to the scrap metal trade.”

He adds that inspections have also revealed that there is a large build up of stock especially in Region Four which is why Cabinet approved the limited restart.
