The Ministry of the Presidency has confirmed Senior Superintendent Gladwin Samuels in the position of Deputy Director of Prisons.

The promotion took effect on February 1, 2017. The move by the ministry also featured several other promotions and confirmations within the Prison Service.

Samuels is presently performing the duties of the Director of Prison as its substantive head Carl Graham is on pre-retirement leave.

Earlier this week, a senior government official told the News Room that Samuels is likely to be confirmed as the Director of Prison upon the completion of Graham’s retirement leave.

The senior government functionary also dispelled rumours that an Assistant Commissioner of Police from the Guyana Police Force would be moving over to head the Prison Service.

“He is a policeman and we want him to remain a policeman” the government official told the News Room.

Graham’s confirmation as Deputy Director undoubtedly clears the way for him to be the next head of the Prison Service.

Among the other persons making the list of promotions for the prison body are Alexander Hopkinson as Superintendent of Prisons, Nicklon Elliot, Kevin Pilgrim and Alston Scott as Duty officers. They make up a list of 115 promotions and confirmations.
