GBA starts season with successful GUMDAC tourney
The Guyana Badminton Association (GBA) started the season with the annual GUMDAC Open Doubles tournament that concluded on Friday evening at the National Gymnasium, Mandela Avenue.
The category finals and third place matches were played off, followed by the presentation of trophies. The tournament, which was being played for the fifth year, was made possible through Darrell Carpenay, the Managing Director of GUMDAC, and also an executive of the GBA.
The highlight of the evening was the Men’s Doubles featuring national and Caribbean champion Priyanna Ramdhani, who partnered Avinash Odit and took the top Men’s pair of Nicholas Ali and Jonathan Mangra.
Ali/Mangra took the opening set 21-14, before losing the second 19-21. They eventually closed out the game with a 21-13 third set win to claim the coveted title. Below are the summarised scores from the games played on the final day.
OPEN MEN’S DOUBLES THIRD PLACE: Marlon Chung and Ronald Chang Yuen defeated Gokarn Ramdhani and Javid Rahaman: 21-16, 21-19.
OPEN MEN’S DOUBLES FINAL: Nicholas Ali and Jonathan Manga defeated Priyanna Ramdhani and Avinash Odit: 21-14, 19-21, 21-13.
OPEN LADIES DOUBLES ROUND-ROBIN: Priyanna Ramdhani and Greer Jackson defeated Angelica Holder and Pricilla Moore: 21-9, 21-10; Angelica Holder and Pricilla Moore defeated Ayanna Wickham-Watson and Emelia Ramdhani: 21-17, 21-12.
OPEN MIXED DOUBLES THIRD PLACE: Ronald Chang Yuen and Pricilla Moore defeated Avinash Odit and Angelica Holder: 21-13, 17-21, 21-17.
OPEN LADIES DOUBLES FINAL: Priyanna Ramdhani and Jonathan Mangra defeated Nicholas Ali and Greer Jackson: 21-17, 21-15.

The GBA, in a statement, said it is pleased with the turnout of the players, especially at the starting of the new season. The GBA further stated that plans are in order for the Mashramani tournament, set for later this month.
