Primary drug shortage being addressed in Region Seven

Medical supplies to treat a wide range of complaints in Region Seven (Cuyuni/Mazaruni) have been dispatched to the region.

A Region 7 health official last week raised concerns about the shortage of essential drugs to treat ailments including hypertension, diabetes, malaria (affecting adults and children), upset stomach, asthma and other types of physical distresses, at the interior locations at Issano, Kurupung and Isseneru.

However, it was clarified that the shortage of medication was confined to the outlets at those three interior locations and does not reflect a shortage at the central storage facility in the capital.

Meanwhile, four more Region 7 communities: Jawalla, Kamarang, Phillipi and Bartica will receive their supplies of drugs by Friday the Ministry said.

Recently appointed Minister of Public Health, Volda Lawrence, said she is working to correct deficiencies in the procurement and distribution of drugs to health institutions across the country.

She said after reaching out to Regional officials, it was disclosed that some of the regions are short on supplies.
