Three perish in early morning fire

The closely knitted community of Beterverwagting on the East Coast of Demerara (E.C.D) was awoken this morning (Sunday, February 12, 2017) by the sound of sirens as firefighters were making their way to put out a fire in the area where three persons were reportedly trapped in a burning building.he names of the three persons who perished are not forthcoming but the News Room learned that a mother, her husband and her children resided at the home.

The names of the three persons who perished are 1-year-old Nakasia Pollard, 27-year-old Latoya Telford and 36-year-old Leonard Pollard.

News Room understands that the fire started from the upper flat of the building while the occupants were asleep and quickly engulfed the two-storied wooden structure.
According to reports, the fire began at about 3:40 hours and by the time the Guyana Fire Service (G.F.S) could arrive on the scene, the building was completely engulfed in flames.
Firefighters and detectives are presently at the scene conducting investigations and removing the corpses which are burnt beyond recognition. So far they have removed the corpses of two adults and a child.
The News Room was told that the fire may have been started by an arsonist but it is unclear whether or not he was also killed in the flames.
More details on the fire will be provided when it becomes available.
Investigations are continuing.
