BREAKING NEWS: Police succumbs to injuries following East Coast accident

Police Corporal, Ashwel Jackman who was the driver of a Guyana Police Force’s (GPF) minibus which crashed into a garage on the East Coast of Demerara has succumbed to his injuries.

The News Room was able to confirm that Jackman was the only occupant of the vehicle; PTT 8504.

As a result of the accident which occurred at around 03:00hrs this morning (Friday, February 24, 2017) opposite the Vigilance Police Station, the young man was suffering from severe head injuries.

There were discussions which had commenced this morning to have the injured rank transported to a private hospital but doctors at the public hospital advised against such a move given his critical condition.

His death came one year after former Assistant Commissioner of Police, Balram Persaud lost his life to an accident. Persaud died after ended up in an accident on the West Bank of Demerara on February 23, 2016.

Jackman was attached to the Mess Hall of the force and functioned mostly as a driver. The young man who was described as a very dedicated and willing person, worked for the most part of yesterday (February 23, 2017).

The News Room has been told that he signed off from work at around 21:00hrs on Thursday evening but later returned to the Brickdam Police Station and uplifted the keys for the vehicle and headed out. It is not clear if he was on official duty at the time of the accident.

The minibus suffered extensive damage and also caused damage to a garage following the impact.
