A teenager from Sophia was today (Friday, March 03, 2017) arrested by the police in connection with the murder of Hymant Persaud, the brother of Commissioner of Police, Seelall Persaud.

The young man was reportedly picked up from his home in Sophia after the police acted on intelligence from persons in the area surrounding the incident.

The News Room learned that the teenager was also placed on an identification parade today (Friday, March 03, 2017) and he was positively identified.

Persaud of Essequibo on the night of his murder was first imbibing in Eccles on the East Bank of Demerara and then later went to get cigarettes before moving to the Stabroek area. It was there that he was reportedly tailed by a group of men who thought that the bag he had in his position contained money.

The men eventually pounced on Persaud and a scuffle ensued during which he was stabbed. He was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital and later succumbed.

The police, seven days after the murder, released an image of Persaud’s body seeking the public’s help to identify him, after which it he was found to be the brother of Commissioner of Police.

At the time of the killing and subsequently, when the police became involved,  Commissioner of Police Seelall Persaud was on leave. The Top Cop is still on leave even as the family paid their final respects to Hymant Persaud on Thursday (March 02, 2017) in Essequibo.

Several embers of the Guyana Police Force senior staff attended the funeral.
