Anjanie Boodnarine, the reputed wife of Barry Dataram was moments ago arrested as she attempted to smuggle cigarettes into the Mazaruni Prison where Dataram is serving jail term for cocaine trafficking.
The News Room has been informed that the woman was busted with the cigarettes which were being taken into the facility with chocolates.
Alert prison officers at the facility made the discovery as they conducted the mandatory checks of the items.
An investigation has since been launched.
Senior police and prison sources have confirmed the incident, adding that checks will be done to the chocolates to ensure that they are not laced with any illegal substance.
While charges were earlier this year dropped against Boodnarine, Dataram was sentenced to three years, running concurrently to a 60-month prison sentence for narcotics possession, after several parcels of cocaine at his East Bank Demerara home.
Dataram is also serving a 48-month sentence for an immigration offence after himself and Boodnarain faked passports and escaped to Suriname.
