The life of the nation’s president might be in danger, and as a result, his security detail is likely to be boosted even further.

Responding to questions asked by media operatives at today’s (Thursday, April 20, 2017) post-cabinet media briefing, Minister of State, Joseph Harmon confirmed that the government has received reports from the law enforcement authorities, of a possible plot to assassinate the President.

He said, “the administration has been provided with some information by the police about some ongoing investigations of this nature”. He added that the investigation “has reached a point where the advice of the Police legal advisor has been sought.”

However, the Minister said since it is an ongoing investigation, he is not at liberty to disclose any further information.

The Ministry of the Presidency is currently undergoing rehabilitative works and has been fitted with a high fence described as “the wall of China” by Opposition Leader, Bharrat Jagdeo.

To this, Harmon said “it’s important that we understand that while we have a very popular President, that people all around this country love him and embrace him, and sometimes there are people who are misguided, some people who are guided by what they say on Facebook and the copy cat type of issues and therefore we always have to be careful.”

He reminded that the Government takes security very seriously and will spare no effort in ensuring that all grounds are adequately covered, saying “security is not something you play with.”

But even as the probe into the possible plot continues, the Minister was asked a very definitive question as it relates to the investigation.

Since Mr. David Granger became president in 2015, his uniformed security detail and the visible security protocol which is employed at events where he is expected to be present, out-numbered the presidents before him.
