Reigning champions Guyana Jaguars endured a 10-wicket humbling at the hands of the Leeward Islands Hurricanes on Sunday, ending their campaign in the 2016/2017 Professional Cricket League Four-day championship with a humiliating loss.
Hurricanes blew away the Jaguars with a day to spare, but even that could not deny Leon Johnson’s men championship honours as they came into the match way ahead of all the teams on the points table.
Final scores in the match: Guyana Jaguars 187 and 143; Leeward Islands Hurricanes 306 and 25-0.
Starting the day on 255-7, Hurricances carried on to 306 with Raymon Reifer adding two more wickets to his overnight tally, finishing with 6-75. Faced with a deficit of 119, Jaguars batsmen crumbled for the second time in the match with only Chanderpaul Hemraj (29), Keemo Paul (26), Anthony Bramble (23) and Veerasammy Permaul (20) showing fight.
Pacer Gavin Tonge bagged 3-33, off-spinner Rakheem Cornwall 3-68 and Jeremiah Louis (2-16). Hurricanes openers Montcin Hodge and Chesney Hodge then coasted to the victory target to put a blunder on an otherwise successful campaign by the Jaguars.
For his match-figures of 9-136, Cornwall was named Man-of-the-Match after ending with match figures of 9-136.
