Lone bandit attempts to strangle East Canje woman during robbery

The Police in B Division have arrested a man who today (Wednesday, May 10, 2017) attacked and robbed a woman at her Fort Ordinance, East Canje, Berbice home.

The suspect who is a known to the police for conducting a number break and enters and robberies in the East Canje Berbice area, also attempted to strangle her at her home during the incident.

The suspect has been identified as 44-year-old Clifton Ramsarran who resides next door to the victim.

 

News Room understands that at about 8:00 hours on Wednesday morning, the suspect attacked his 58-year-old neighbour Sabita Kellawan armed with a cutlass. He then placed a rope around the woman’s neck in an attempt to strangle her if she does not hand over cash and valuables.

Kellawan told the News Room that after being grabbed by the suspect, she was taken to the upper flat of her home where the man demanded that she hand over her money and gold jewellery.

At the time of the attack, Kellawan was at home with her sick mother who was left in the lower flat of the building.

According to information received, after being satisfied with his loot, the accused escaped on foot as the traumatised woman made effort to contact the Central Police Station in New Amsterdam.

According to a police source, the suspect boarded a motor car and was on his way across the Berbice River Bridge. He was chased by the ranks from the Central Police Station.

The News Room was informed that ranks after receiving information of the incident managed to intercept the motor car that the suspect boarded. He then fled into the nearby savannah but was pursued by police officers and later caught.

Ramsarran was escorted to the Central Police Station lock-ups pending charges.
