The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) is moving to have countrywide awareness campaigns regarding its kit, otherwise known as the gears/uniform which it issues to members of the Army.

This was confirmed by Chief of Staff, Patrick West during an invited comment by the News Room on Thursday (May 11, 2017). According to West, the move to do the awareness has been in the making for some time now but will be expedited.

During the campaigns, the Guyana Defence Force would identify the materials its uniforms are made of, the special features on those uniforms and what accessories ought to be worn with each uniform.

The awareness would also target the vehicles which are used by the Force and would include the standard of the colours of these vehicles as well as their registration plates.

On Monday, (May 08, 2017), an unemployed teenager who was at the time carrying marijuana in a haversack was arrested by the police. He was fully decked out in a uniform which has the striking resemblance of an authentic GDF uniform. He told the police that the uniform was issued to him by an older brother. Yesterday the army head said that on examinations conducted on the uniform, it is not one of theirs.

Added to that he said that the name which was provided to the police by the teenager as being his brother, is not someone who is listed as a regular member of the army and checks were being carried out to see if the name provided, is one who is listed among the reserve ranks of the force.
