Veterans football starts this weekend at Tucville

Several former national football players will be in action at the Tucville Community Centre ground, starting this weekend. The ‘Clash of Veterans’ tournament is being organised by the Alex Bunbury Sports and Academic Academy in partnership with the Guyana Football Federation and main sponsor Banks DIH Limited.

Dubbed ‘The Super 8 Clash’, this inaugural tournament will field veteran football teams from Georgetown, East Coast Demerara and West Bank Demerara.

The round-robin, knockout tournament will run for a month, featuring clubs led by Dion Barnwell, Chris Barnwell, Anthony Stanton, Gordon Braithwaite, Mortimer Stewart, Floyd Cadogan, Rawle Jones and Terrence Lewis.

The Super 8 teams are Pele FC, Beacon FC, Santos FC, Wales FC, Western Tigers FC, Rastas FC, Thomas United FC and Plaisance FC.

Trophies and cash prizes are at stake, and the tournament has also received support from Star Party Rentals and Guyana all-rounder Christopher Barnwell. Admission to the game is free, 10 of which will be held this weekend.

On Saturday, the action will start at 13:00h with a Women’s Mixed Team game, before the veterans games get underway at 15:00h.

In the opening game, Pele will play Rastas; Western Tigers and Santos will square off an hour later; Beacons and Plaisance will clash at 17:00h and Thomas United will confront Wales from 18:00h.

On Sunday, the action will kick off at noon with Wales playing Santos, followed by Rastas and Plaisance an hour later. This will be followed by an exhibition game featuring Under-13 boys, after which Beacon will take on Pele and Thomas United will collide with Western Tigers.

The round-robin action will continue on May 20, 21, 26, 27 and 28 with the semi-finals and final set for June 3 and 4.
