GOBSA to host inaugural athletics meet this weekend

Guyana Overseas Based Sports Association Inc. (GOBSA) will host its first athletics event this weekend at the National Track and Field Centre, Leonora. At the official launch on Wednesday morning, President of the GOBSA, David Thomas, highlighted the intention of the organisation.

“Our motto is to develop Guyana’s youth locally and internationally through grounded education and we are here to help those athletes in need,” Thomas shared. Organiser within the Association, Oswald Thomas, shared what the organisation hopes to accomplish within Guyana’s athletics framework.

“We want help them gain the opportunities to further themselves, we don’t want to deplete the talent here but we want to help these athletes be positive youths through scholarships,” Thomas mentioned.

Former athlete, Gordon Lewis, also shared his bit on his role with the organisation and what they hope to achieve.

“We just want them to know that athletics is a mechanism, as a way out, where you can get a good education but last year we had a good event and we feel the need to make this event an annual event, but the intention is to encourage the athletes track and field can actually get you where you want to be in life,” Lewis noted.

The track and field event will be held on May 27 and 28 from 11:00h on each day at the Leonora Stadium. The Athletics Association of Guyana will use it as a dry run for the Junior team set to participate in the South American Junior Championships slated for June.

The meet this weekend is being dubbed ‘Guyana versus the rest’.
