Several persons from the Amerindian Village of Chenapou were this afternoon (Sunday, May 28, 2017) arrested and brought to Georgetown allegedly in connection with illegal mining at the Kaieteur National Park (KNP).

According to information received, the residents were picked up by soldiers and officers from the Guyana Geology and Mines Commission (GGMC) and flown to the city to be questioned by law enforcement authorities.

The government in the past has noted that the KNP which is listed as one of the Country’s protected areas, is off limits to mining operations and has in the past removed several dredges from the area.

The responsibility of curbing such activities lies with the park rangers.
