Bartica miner gets three years in prison for 481 grams of cannabis

A 25-year-old miner, who was on Monday (May 29, 2017) arrested with a quantity of cannabis at the Itaballi Checkpoint, was today (Tuesday, May 30, 2017) remanded to prison.

Sherwin McAlmont of 7th Avenue, Bartica, Region Seven, was arrested following a search conducted on the motor lorry in which he was travelling.

He appeared at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday and pleaded guilty to the charge of Possession of Narcotics for the Purpose of Trafficking.

He was sentenced to three years imprisonment by His Worship Delon Best.

According to information received, at about 13:00 hours on Monday, ranks of the Itaballi Police checkpoint conducted a search on Motor Lorry GTT- 6635 which was heading into Puruni Backdam driven by Arnold Boodram.

A search was then conducted on the passenger, McAlmont where, in a black plastic bag he was carrying at the time, a quantity of leaves seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis was found.

He was told of the police suspicions and of the offence committed.
