STAY AWAY from the roads – Security Minister urges

Citizens are being urged to stay away from the Camp Street prison and its immediate environs and to get off the roads to allow the security forces to manage the removal of prisoners and quell the fire which gutted most of the prison.

The immediate strategy is to put out the fire and to remove the prisoners to other locations, mainly the Lusignan Prison on the East Coast of Demerara. Minister of Public Security Khemraj Ramjattan has said the removal of the prisoners and quelling the riotous behaviour of the prisoners is a herculean task.

“It is an extremely unfortunate situation… an extraordinarily serious situation,” he said in a video statement issued by the Department of Public Information.

He said the operation by the Joint Services is to “ensure our safety and security.”
“Stay away from the roads immediately, we would need the roads… to be passable.”

The police have since set up road blocks in each division and security has been beefed up at State House, the official residence of the President.
