The Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) has been seizing illegally imported chicken and this has so far led to the prosecution of two persons.

According to the GRA, it seized over 190 boxes of chicken from a cold-storage facility on the Corentyne Coast and another 52 boxes from a facility at Annandale, East Coast of Demerara.  The GRA indicated that a further 375 boxes of chicken, weighing some 15, 000 pounds, were seized and two persons were arrested and placed on station bail.

Other exercises were also conducted simultaneously at Bush Lot, West Coast Berbice and Bourda Market leading to the discovery of more irregularities in the sale of chicken, prompting seizures and legal action.

To prevent the illegally imported chicken from reentering the market, the GRA said it will be donating such seizures for utilization by the appropriate Ministries and other State Agencies, rather than offering them for sale to the public.
