The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) has confirmed that one of its own shot and killed his reputed wife in broad daylight today in Alexander Village, Georgetown at around 11:00hrs.
The victim has been identified as Reona Payne, who worked as a Travel Agent with Muneshwers Ltd.
According to a GDF statement, Captain Orwain Sandy is immediately interdicted from duties and the GDF has launched an inquiry into the incident.
“The Force is truly saddened by this occurrence and would want to reassure the general populace that this is an isolated incident and is not reflective of the Values and Standards of the Guyana Defence Force.”
The statement further noted that the Chief of Staff has ordered the Inspector General of the Guyana Defence Force to conduct a Board of Inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“The Guyana Defence Force extends sincerest condolences to the relatives of the late Reona Payne.”
News Room had reported that the couple was seen arguing in the car when Payne exited and Sandy reportedly picked up the gun and shot her several times.
He left her body lying on the side of the road and surrendered at the Ruimveldt Police Station.
News Room understands that Sandy separated from his first wife, Amanda Nedd, after which he and Payne moved in together.
