Berbice mother of 4 murdered, husband attempts suicide

A mother of four was brutally stabbed and her throat slit by her 30-year-old reputed husband who then tried to take his own life last night at Limlair Village East Berbice, Corentyne.

Dead is 28-year-old Tovonnie Alexci Simmons, who desperately tried to run away from the man as she jumped from her mother’s veranda and ran for about 200 meters until she fell down.

The suspect, Imran Lyte, a farmer, caught up with a screaming Simmons, stabbed her 12 times and then slit her throat as she laid defenceless on the road.

The woman was stabbed to the breasts, back, hip, chest, chin and arms. Lyte escaped in the back dam area where he drank a poisonous substance.

News Room understands that he was taken to the Port Mourant hospital by his relatives where he remains under police guard.

The incident occurred just after 11pm on Wednesday.

Reports reaching News Room revealed that the mother of 4 was at her mother’s house when Lyte visited to discuss a previous argument which occurred on Sunday between Lyte and the brother of Simmons.

However, Lyte and Simmons got into a heated argument, when he pulled out the knife and launched the brutal attack.

Simmons was pronounced dead on arrival at the New Amsterdam Hospital.
