Update: West Side brothers killed

Two brothers lost their lives shortly after 11:00hrs this morning after they were struck off their bicycle by a minibus on the West Coast Demerara (WCD) Public Road – a short distance away from the Den Amstel Police Station.

Dead are 28-year-old Sherman West and 19-year-old Shalum Allen, both of Fellowship/ Den Amstel, WCD.

Two minibus drivers have been arrested in connection with the accident and assisting with the investigations.

So far, police investigations revealed that minibus BVV 8882 was proceeding east along the northern side of the road and stopped to put off some passengers.

The bicycle was proceeding in the same direction and was passing from behind the minibus.

As the bicycle was passing the bus, the driver suddenly drove off and its right side collided with the left handle bar of the bicycle.

As a result, the cyclist and his brother fell onto the southern carriageway, and were struck by minibus BVV 7042.

They were picked up in an unconscious state and taken to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where they were pronounced dead on arrival.

When News Room visited the accident scene the two minibuses BVV 8882 and BVV 7042 were impounded at the police station.

Police administered breathalyzer tests on the two minibus drivers and no trace of alcohol was found.

Investigations are ongoing.
