After months of speculation, the Central Committee  (CC)of the People’s Progressive Party (PPP) Saturday elected embattled former Minister of Housing Irfaan Ali as its presidential candidate via secret ballot.

Three other contenders, Gail Teixeira, Dr Vindhya Persaud and Frank Anthony pulled out of the race and so the battle was between Ali and former Attorney General, Anil Nandlall.

It was not a tight race as the 35 members of the CC voted 24-11.

Ali has secured the presidential candidacy at a time when the validity of his academic credentials is being questioned.

He is also in the courts having been charged with 19 counts of fraud.
