Unity murder victim, suspect had history of misunderstandings- Police

A father of one is now dead after a brutal beating from his cousin on Tuesday evening at Unity, East Coast Demerara (ECD). According to the police, the two men have had a history of misunderstandings.

Arvin Dipchand, also known as Krishna, was allegedly beaten to death with a hammer and a piece of wood by his cousin, a 28-year-old electrician whose only name was given as “Mario.”

The incident occurred at around 18:00hrs at Second Street, Unity, ECD.

The News Room understands that 35-year-old Dipchand was visiting his 11-year-old son, who lives with his mother –Dipchand’s ex-wife –at Unity.

The suspect who was recently released from prison, reportedly approached Dipchand on the street and dealt him several lashes to the head and two cuffs to the face.

Dipchand attempted to drive away from the scene but collapsed a short distance away. He was rushed to the Mahaicony Cottage Hospital by Community Policing Group members where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

Dipchand’s wife Cindy, spoke with the News Room at the couple’s Duchfour, East Coast Demerara home where she related that she last spoke with her husband just after 17:00hrs on Tuesday, requesting him to purchase food.

After some time elapsed with no sign of her husband, she called his cellular phone, but got no response.

She said she received a call from a cousin informing her of the brawl between Dipchand and the suspect. She later visited the hospital and was told her husband succumbed.

Cindy also stated that her husband and the suspect have had several confrontations, as the suspect was allegedly in the habit of stealing from Dipchand.

Cindy claimed the suspect was only recently released from prison for a similar offence.

The suspect is in police custody assisting with investigations.
