AmCham Guyana requests observer status for general elections

A delegation from the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) Guyana on Tuesday met with Chairman of the Guyana Elections Commission (GECOM) Justice (Rt’d) Claudette Singh along with members of the Commission and Secretariat.

A press release from AmCham revealed that the Commission “welcomed the offer of support from AMCHAM Guyana and committed to deliberate on granting observer status to the organization.”

According to the release, the Commission also took the opportunity to enquire about AmCham Guyana’s global network and offered assistance to sensitize the Chambers members on the Gecom Secretariat’s role and function.

“Both the Chamber and the Commission agreed to collaborate closely on matters pertaining to any support the Commission may need leading up to the General and Regional Elections in 2020.”

The AmCham delegation was led by its President Zulfikar Ally.

On Tuesday October 29, 2019, a delegation from AMCHAM Guyana led by its President Mr. Zulfikar Ally met with Chairperson of the Guyana Elections Commission Justice Claudette Singh and members of the Commission and its secretariat.

President Ally also took the opportunity to formally welcome the appointment of Justice Singh to the post of GECOM Chairman and related that AMCHAM Guyana fully supports her in presiding over the upcoming General and Regional Elections.

The commission was updated on the role and functions of AMCHAM Guyana, and the upcoming initiatives that the organization intend to pursue during and leading up to the national elections expected to be held in March 2020, one of which is the training for journalists on election’s coverage.

The Commission welcomed the offer of support from AMCHAM Guyana and committed to deliberate on granting observer status to the organization. The Commission also took the opportunity to enquire about AmCham Guyana’s global network and offered assistance to sensitize the Chambers members on the Gecom Secretariats role and function. Both the Chamber and the Commission agreed to collaborate closely on matters pertaining to any support the Commission may need leading up to the General and Regional Elections in 2020.
