Rice farmer murdered after complaining of goats entering his field

Police are investigating the murder of a 36-year-old man who succumbed on New Year’s Day at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), days after he was beaten by two men at First Street, Johanna North, Black Bush Polder, Corentyne, Berbice.

In a statement on Wednesday, the police said Chanderpaul Dhoman called ‘Jack’ was riding his bicycle along the street at around 20:00hrs on December 30 when he noticed the men and others imbibing in a yard. The man, who also resides in the community, reportedly stopped to complain about the men’s goats grazing in his rice fields and an argument ensued.

According to the police, the suspects confronted Dhoman and allegedly dealt him a lash to his head with a metal object causing injuries. They then proceed to physically assault the rice farmer and fled the scene.

Dhoman was taken to the Mibicuri Public Hospital in a semi-conscious condition where he received medical attention and was immediately referred to New Amsterdam Public Hospital.

Thereafter, Dhoman was transferred to Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation where he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit and placed on the life support machine.

The 36-year-old man succumbed to his injuries on January 01.

Police said the suspects were arrested and are in custody assisting with the investigations.
