Driver crashes vehicle, dies while fleeing from bandits

A driver attached to Lins Bakery located at South Road in Georgetown died after he crashed into a fence while attempting to escape from two armed bandits at Onderneeming, Sand Pitt, Essequibo Coast on Sunday.

Shawn Albert called Dexter, 39, of Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara died Sunday evening. Police Headquarters reported that Albert, who was the driver of motorbus GWW 1783, and Decklon Lee, a salesman, traveled to Essequibo to sell pastries.

While at Pam John shop at Church Street in Onderneeming, they were approached by two masked gunmen. Police said one of the men pointed a gun at Lee and ordered him to hand over all the cash while Albert remained inside the vehicle.

But Lee retaliated and a scuffle ensued with the gunman; police said Lee told Albert to drive away during which the gunman discharged three rounds at Lee while Albert lost control of the vehicle and crashed into a nearby fence.

After the gunmen escaped, Lee discovered that between $60,000 to $70,000 was missing from the bus.

Albert was subsequently taken to the Suddie Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police said no gunshot wound or any other wounds were observed on the body.

The body is presently at the Suddie Hospital Mortuary awaiting a post mortem examination. Investigations are ongoing.
