A 31-year-old driver attached to the Ministry of Health was on Monday remanded to prison for allegedly stealing 66 COVID-19 vaccination books.

Mark Samuels appeared before City Magistrate Sherdel Isaacs-Marcus and denied that between August 22 and August 23, at Brickdam, Georgetown, he broke and entered the vaccination centre of the Ministry of Health and stole 66 COVID-19 vaccination books valued $1,014.

His attorney, Dexter Todd made an application for bail and told the court that his client is innocent since the said items were not found in his possession.

Todd also disclosed that Samuels was previously charged with rape and is awaiting trial at the High Court. Samuels was also charged in 2018 for allegedly stealing over $1M in diesel from GuyOil.

Police Prosecutor Annalisa Brummell told the court that there is a CCTV video showing Samuels entering the premises. The prosecutor objected to Samuels being released on bail citing the serious nature of the offense.

Magistrate Isaacs-Marcus remanded Samuels to prison until September 27.
