Third bee attack in Berbice claims another life

A third bee attack in the county of Berbice has claimed the life of another person on Friday and injured several others in Black Bush Polder, Corentyne, Berbice.

Dead is 61-year-old Sirpaul ‘Rishi’ Hemraj, of Mibicuri South, Black Bush Polder; he was a ranger and former Chairman of the Water Users Association. The News Room understands that Hemraj and others ventured into the backdam to check on an excavator when they were attacked by a swarm of bees.

Chandradatt Nanko, 50, one of the men who was with Hemraj during the attack, said everyone ran but Hemraj was left behind.

“Couple of us run away and the supervisor man – he was big and fat and he na able run – we run for our lives and hide. Mohan (the other ranger) seh he (Hemraj) throw down he bike and he lay down deh and leff and like dem attack he plenty and after like he na able no more, he crawl and go near the trench corner where the water and mud deh”, Nanko said.

According to Nanko, after the bees disappeared, they went back for Hemraj and found him walking out from the trench covered in mud.

They rushed him to the Mibicuri Hospital where he died while receiving treatment.

This is the third bee attack in two days on the Corentyne.  John Sutherland, a 57-year-old labourer was attacked by bees in Eversham Village, Corentyne in Region Six on Thursday too. The News Room reported that Sutherland left home to accompany two farmers to the Eversham backdam to “show them the rice field” that had to be ploughed.

While there, the men discovered bees and ran. But Sutherland, who had a physical disability, could not run. He was later found dead, with stings all about his body.

Additionally, Dorothy Adams, a 58-year-old housewife from Ratter Dam East Bank Berbice (EBB), Region Six (East Berbice- Corentyne), died on Thursday afternoon after she was reportedly attacked by a swarm of bees.

According to police headquarters, the woman’s reputed husband Vishnu Persaud reported that she went to a nearby shop at about 17:00 hrs to make a purchase.

About 10 minutes later, however, a passerby reportedly told Adams that his wife was stung by bees. He was also told that she was lying under a house located about 400 meters from their house. She was taken to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital where she was pronounced dead.
