Update: Several homeless in Camp St. fire

Several makeshift houses on a stretch of land on Camp and Charlotte Streets in Georgetown were destroyed by fire of unknown origin on Tuesday night leaving at least four people homeless.

After an hour of battling the huge blaze, firefighters were able to bring the fire under control.

The News Room understands that the building caught fire sometime after 21:00hrs on Tuesday.

One of the occupants identified as Ashanti told reporters that she believes the fire was an act of arson.

She explained that she was at her shop at the front of the building when she saw the suspect enter his house and removed all his valuables. Shortly after the suspect left, people ran out and shouted “fire.”

Meanwhile, Minister of Home Affairs Robeson Benn, who was at the scene, spoke with reporters and expressed his satisfaction with the response of the Guyana Fire Service.
