Britton wins opening game of Ecuador International Open

Guyanese table tennis Shemar Britton made an impressive start to the Ecuador International Open, defeating Ignacio Paul Cedeno Ponce of the host country on Tuesday.

Competing on his maiden Senior World Tournament, Britton, a former Caribbean Under-21 champion, prevailed 4-1 after losing the opening set in Round One of the Men’s Singles.

Ponce made a solid start with an 11-6 victory in the first set, but Britton controlled the match thereafter, winning the next four sets in the best-of-seven showdown.

The 2019 Caribbean Championship bronze medallist won 11-8, 11-6, 11-8, 11-6.

Round Two of the Men’s Singles competition is slated for Tuesday afternoon.
