Three busted with over $79M in ganja

A joint operation by the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) and the Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard resulted in the seizure of 1, 580 pounds (717 kg) of marijuana valued over $79 million.
The operation was conducted at De Veldt, Upper Berbice River on Saturday during which three persons were arrested.

“During this operation the officers searched a building that was occupied by several individuals including miners. While searching the said building the officers discovered several parcels of suspected cannabis,” CANU stated in a press release.

Those arrested are Massiah Durant, 52; Shawn Lindie Snr, 44, and 29-year-old Shawn Lindie Jnr.

CANU revealed that the cannabis seized is believed to have been intended for transshipment to another territory.

“CANU would like to thank the Joint Services and in this case the Coast Guard for it continued support especially when it comes to maritime operations,” the statement concluded.
