Decomposed body, suspected to be missing fisherman, washes ashore

The badly decomposed body, suspected to be that of missing fisherman Suraj Dhaneshwar, was discovered on the foreshore at Dantzig, Mahaicony on Monday. The News Room understands that the body is presently at the Bailey’s Funeral Home and a DNA test will be conducted to determine the identity of the person.

Police sources disclosed that the remains were found between some rocks in the Mahaicony River by a fisherman who had gone to the location to fish.

The discovery was made at approximately 10:15 hrs and the fisherman immediately contacted the Mahaicony Police Station.

A police source close to the investigation told the News Room that the body appears to be that of Dhaneshwar, 28. However, only DNA results will determine such at this point.

Just over two weeks ago, Dhaneshwar of Railway Line, Rosignol Village, West Coast Berbice fell overboard while out fishing with his captain off the coast of Bath Settlement.

He was reportedly clinging to an icebox when the boat capsized. The icebox has since been recovered.
Dhaneshwar, a father of a two-year-old boy had been a fisherman for the past five years and previously worked as a fisherman in Suriname and at the Rosignol Fishing Complex.

His sister, Omawattie Dhaneshwar told the News Room that when they heard of the discovery they immediately inquired and ventured to the Bailey’s Funeral Home.

The sister said she believes it is her brother but the family will await the results of the DNA test.
