Ex-media worker among 3 arrested in $5M cocaine bust

A former media worker, an ex-officer of the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) and a Guyana Revenue Authority (GRA) officer have been arrested following a $5 million cocaine bust at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport (CJIA) on Friday night.

Zanneel Williams, 25, of Lamaha Gardens, Georgetown was initially arrested at CJIA after 7.9kg of cocaine was discovered concealed in the walls of her laptop bag.

CANU in a statement revealed after the woman was taken to its Headquarters, another 1.6 kg of cocaine was found strapped to her body.

Williams was destined to travel to the United States on a Jetblue flight B6 2166 on Friday last. CANU noted that had the illegal drugs made it out of Guyana, it would have carried a street value of US$300,000.

Meanwhile, following further investigations, a former CANU officer identified as 33-year-old Anil Sookhoo of Kuru Kuru, Soesdyke/Linden Highway, was also arrested, along with GRA Officer Shameka Caesar, 27, of Durban Street, Wortmanville, Georgetown.
