Samuels gave Stokes a spray after the allrounder was launched for four successive sixes by Carlos Brathwaite in the final over to win Sunday’s tournament decider in dramatic fashion at Eden Gardens.
The veteran, who scored an unbeaten 85 from 66 balls in a man-of-the-match performance, breached Article 2.1.4 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “using language or a gesture that is obscene, offensive or insulting during an International Match”.
Samuels pleaded guilty to the charge handed down by ICC match referee Ranjan Madugalle, but didn’t hold back when he was asked about his confrontation with Stokes in the final over.
“Well he doesn’t learn,” Samuels said. “Because they keep telling him, whenever he plays against me (they say) ‘don’t speak to me, because I’m going to perform. I didn’t even face a ball and he had so much to say today so I know that I have to be right there until the end, again.”
Stokes wasn’t the only person Samuels got stuck into following the match. Samuels slammed Australian legend Shane Warne after the spin king was critical of the West Indian’s dismissal in the semi-final upset against India in Mumbai.
“Shane Warne has been talking continuously and all I want to say is ‘this (man-of-the-match award) is for Shane Warne’,” Samuels told the host broadcaster upon receiving his award. “I answer with the bat and not the mic.”
But Samuels quickly did a 180 when he fronted the press shortly after.
“I played a Test series in Australia (in 2015-16) and every day, Shane Warne has a problem with me,” Samuels said, feet on the table, at his post-match press conference.
“I don’t know what (I did). I’ve never disrespected him. Seems as if he has a lot inside him that he needs to come out. So I don’t appreciate the way he continues to talk to about me and the things that he keeps doing. I don’t know. Maybe because my face is real and his face is not?”
The stunning victory was the West Indies second World T20 title following on from their 2012 triumph in Sri Lanka.
It was successful day for the Caribbean with the women’s team winning their maiden Women’s World T20 crown after they defeated the Commonwealth Bank Southern Stars by eight wickets.
