A man who has since been identified as a ‘Junkie’ was this morning found dead on Cornhill Street in front of the old Guyana National Cooperative Bank (GNCB) building.

The dead man was identified as 45-year-old Dexter Arthur. His last known address was Pouderoyen on the West Bank of Demerara.

According to persons in the general Stabroek Market Area, the man was reportedly stabbed to death with a knife, by an employee of a bus used to sell fruits and vegetables. The bus number was given as GNN 4985 which is registered to Karticka Perdsaud of Lot 271 Newtown Enmore, East Coast Demerara.

Two employees of the vending bus have been arrested and are presently being held at the Brickdam Police Station.

News Room was told that the bus arrived at the location to vend but the ‘Junkie’ was sleeping where the men wanted to park the minibus.

Noticing this, One of the men reportedly woke the man up from his sleep by pelting him with rotten cassavas and bananas which eyewitnesses say, angered the man.

The ‘Junkie’ then picked up a heavy metal to retaliate but before he could do so, he was reportedly stabbed with a knife by the other occupant of the mobile vending bus and subsequently fell to the ground and died.

One man who spoke with the News Room on camera related that after stabbing the ‘Junkie’ the employee of the fruit bus ran from the location and himself along with others gave chase after him.

They, however, encountered a police patrol and informed the patrol of what transpired and the police patrol escorted the man to the station.

While at the Police Station the men who are in custody reportedly told the police that the dead ‘Junkie’ was involved in an altercation with another ‘Junkie’. That account is, however, being disputed by persons in the Stabroek area who claimed to have seen what really transpired.

Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
