Doubles delight for Serena and Venus

Hours after being crowned singles champion, Serena Williams lifted the ladies doubles title with her sister Venus for the sixth time. Serena Williams picked up her second Wimbledon trophy of the day on Centre Court as she claimed the ladies’ doubles title with sister Venus.

The Williams sisters worked superbly in tandem to lift their sixth doubles crown together at the All England Club – a first since 2012 – with a 6-3 6-4 win over Timea Babos and Yaroslava Shvedova.

Only a few hours after winning the singles for a seventh time to claim a 22nd grand slam success – equalling Steffi Graf – Serena was back on court and hungry for more against the fifth seeds.

And Babos and Shvedova went the same way as four other seeded pairs in the draw as the dominant siblings backed up their fearsome reputation. After being broken in the fifth, the Williams sisters rattled off four games in a row to wrap up the opening set – Venus holding off three break points to serve it out.

Serena had found a number of crucial volleys to help her sister out in the opener and that continued in the second as they had too much for their opponents. It was left to Venus to serve out for the match and she duly delivered, picking up her 11th title at Wimbledon, while it is Serena’s 14th. (Digicel Sportsmax)
