International boxing is set for a grand return on August 27 when the Giftland Mall hosts a five-fight card in partnership with the Guyana Boxing Board of Control (GBBC) and Next Generation Entertainment.

Only the main bout has been announced by the GBBC, and it will feature a showdown between Guyanese Dexter Gonzalves and DeMarcus “Chop Chop” Corley of the United States of America. The two fighters will square off for the Fecabox Lightweight belt in a contest billed to last 12 rounds.

While Gonzalves is an up and coming boxer, Corley is well established, boasting a whopping 75 fights. With bouts against the likes of Floyd Mayweather Jr, Zab Judah and Miguel Cotto, the 42-year-old Corley has notched up 47 wins, 28 by way of knockouts.

He is no stranger to losses either, having suffered 27 defeats. The next bout ended in a draw. Corley, who has been fighting as a professional since 1996, recently won the Contender Series in Jamaica.

Gonzalves, a former WBC CABOFE Lightweight champion, started professional boxing in 2006, by which time Corley had already fought 37 times. Gonzalves’ last fight was quite memorable, as he earned a TKO over Clive Atwell in October 2015. After 11 fights, he has chalked up eight wins (five KO’s), one loss and one draw.
