Emancipation Day activities at the Number 63 beach on Monday came to an abrupt halt, after a 9-year-old boy was hit by a jet ski and subsequently died.
Dead is 9-year-old Daniel Mootoosammy of Lot 1, Yakasari, South Black Bush Polder.
The boy was in the company of his uncle and other family members who travelled to the beach to partake in the Emancipation Day activities.
News Room visited the home of the distressed family where we spoke to the child’s father, Veeren Mootoosammy who related that he received a call at around 13:30 hrs on Monday.
“When when me come home from wuk me get the message seh me son end up in accident ah beach” he related.
He said he was told by the child’s uncle that the 9-year-old was in the shallow part of the water when a jet ski passed and allegedly hit him from behind. Mr. Mootoosammy said he was told that after seeing what had happened, the family members rushed to the lad’s assistance.
He was picked up and rushed to the Skeldon Hospital but suffered a seizure on his way there and subsequently died.
Meanwhile according to police sources, the driver of the jet ski; 37-year-old Viaj Arjunandan is currently in police custody assisting with investigations. Arjunandan is an Excavator Operator who resides at Crabwood Creek.
However, the source revealed that the child’s body had no marks of violence or injuries.
The grieving father stated that it was not his son’s first trip to the beach with other relatives, pointing out that he usually accompany other relative to activities at the beach along with his other two brothers.
The grandmother of the lad told News Room that her grandson was excited to go to the beach.
