Although piracy has been on a decrease in Berbice, the Police in ‘B’ Division have recorded 21 murders so far for this year as compared to 17 for the same period last year.

The division also recorded 18 cases of rape as compared to 32 cases for the same period last year.

It is with this in mind that Government is working closely with the Ministry of Public Security to take drastic steps to eradicate the occurrences of murders, rape, cattle rustling and other crimes in the region.

According to President David Granger who was speaking at a recent function in Berbice ” every time I hear about a murder, every time I hear about a rape, every time I hear about suicide, I am concerned, every week I meet with Mr Khemraj Ramjattan, Minister of Public Security himself; a child from this region (region six) and we are going to do something about it, we started to do something about”

The Head of State said for the past fifteen months his administration, through the relevant agencies have been trying to suppress piracy, which resulted in a reduction.

Additionally, the recent murder of the three Black Bush Polder Fishermen was also upsetting, the President noted. “We are going to bring mounted police to patrol the back dams so that you can be safe, you may not see it but every month we fly over this coast to make sure that our fishermen are safe and we are going to bring better police in this region to make sure that you old folks and girl children are safer” he assured.

The President also disclosed that he wants a safe region and if Berbicians open their eyes, they will see the efforts being made to ensure the region becomes safe.
